7 Steps to a Sustainable Summer with The Yacht Social Club
At The Yacht Social Club, we’re dedicated to raising awareness about environmental sustainability within our vibrant community. As we embrace the summer season, we’re excited to share seven essential steps to ensure your time on Sydney Harbour is both enjoyable and eco-friendly. Here’s how you can make a positive impact this summer:
1. Choose Ocean-Safe Sunscreen
Protect your skin and the environment by opting for reef-safe sunscreen. Traditional sunscreens can harm marine life and contribute to coral bleaching. Support brands like Sea Urchin or Wot Not, which are designed to be gentle on both your skin and the ocean.
2. Skip the Plastic Straw
Say goodbye to plastic straws and embrace ocean-friendly wheat straws from Eco Green Straws. Originally used in the 1800s, these straws are a sustainable choice that helps reduce plastic waste. Eco Green Straws is bringing straws back to their roots, offering a greener alternative.
3. Recycle Your Floatie
Whether you’re lounging on a flamingo, watermelon slice, or donut floatie, make sure to recycle it for future use. Label your floatie with your name and yacht name to help us return it if lost. This small step helps reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.
4. Don’t Throw Anything Overboard
Keep our waters clean by avoiding overboard trash. All waste should be disposed of in designated trash bags to prevent it from blowing into the sea. Clearly marked bins on all yachts are provided for recyclables and waste. Ensure your floaties are secured to prevent them from drifting away.
5. Pick Up Trash You See
If you spot any trash, no matter the type, pick it up and place it in the bins on your yacht. This simple action contributes significantly to keeping our waterways pristine and free from plastic pollution.
6. Choose Ocean-Friendly Glitter
Add some sparkle to your summer with eco-friendly glitter from brands like The Glitter Tribe and Glitterazzi.me. These sustainable glitters are designed to be kind to the environment while still providing the shimmer you love.
7. Avoid Single-Use Plastics
Opt for reusable alternatives instead of single-use plastics. Use tote bags, reusable drink containers, wooden cutlery, and paper plates. Please refrain from using water balloons, which contribute to plastic waste in our beautiful harbour.
At The Yacht Social Club, we believe in the power of our community to make a difference. With one of the most beautiful harbours in the world right at our doorstep, let’s work together to keep it pristine and thriving. Your participation in these sustainable practices plays a crucial role in preserving Sydney Harbour for future generations.
